Blood Clots And Birth Control

BLOOD CLOTS & BIRTH CONTROL

Most contraceptive drugs containing hormones increase the risk of blood clots because they produce some of the same hormonal effects as pregnancy. The estrogen in these drugs can increase clotting factors in blood, especially if you smoke or are overweight.

Are You At Risk?

What is a Blood Clot?

A blood clot is a clump of blood cells that are stuck together. This can be dangerous if a blood clot forms inside a blood vessel. Doctors call this a venous thromboembolism.

Contraceptive Drug Facts

Hormone-based birth control changes the natural function of your body.

Most contraceptive drugs containing hormones increase the risk of forming blood clots because they produce some of the same hormonal effects as pregnancy.

Contraceptive pills, patches, rings and some IUDs, as well as implantable devices and injections all use hormones to prevent pregnancy.

Some of these products produce higher risk.

Before using ANY hormone-based contraceptive drugs or products, read ALL the drug information carefully!  If you don’t understand the warnings listed, speak with the pharmacist and/or your prescribing doctor.

Progesterone

Progesterone-only contraceptives generally produce less blood clot risks.

Combination oral contraceptives

Combination oral contraceptives that contain both estrogen and progestin raise the risk for blood clots up to six times greater vs. those which don’t use this combination.

Contraceptive drugs containing drospirenone

Contraceptive drugs containing drospirenone synthetic progestin, such as Beyaz, Slynd, YAZ, Yazmin and Ocella, now carry an increased warning because of possible severe side effects including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke and heart attack.

Nuva Ring

Nuva Ring is up to 6.5 times more likely to create clotting.

The Patch

The Patch: Xulane, Twirla and Zafemy create up to 8 times the risk.

All of these contraceptive drugs carry warnings however, most women and some doctors pay little attention to these warnings.

FDA

In recent years, the FDA has increased the warnings on several of the most problematic contraceptives, but they still remain on the market.

Some women are at far higher risk than others!
